The 17th French Film Festival in Israel: Bravo!

18 French films will be screened during the 17th French Film Festival, organized by Eden Cinema under the direction of Caroline Boneh and the French Institute in Israel. This year, two films that showcase very popular genres in French cinema that the Israeli audience is less exposed to will open and close the festival. The opening film DONNE-MOI DES AILES / SPREAD YOUR WINGS is from the family genre whereas the closing film LES TRADUCTEURS / THE TRANSLATORS by Régis Roinsard is a thriller. These are two of the most popular genres in French cinema.


All the films have Hebrew subtitles and at least half have English subtitles.


WHEN: Available on YES TV starting April 1st, 2020

(cancelled 18-30 Mar 2020 in Cinematheques and Lev Movie Theaters throughout the country)


A collaboration between Eden Cinema, the French Institute of Israel, the Lev Movie Theaters and YES TV will enable you to watch the prominent films of the French film festival, canceled due to the Corona on YES TV starting April 1, 2020. The price of ordering each film in the French Film Festival category will be 24.90 NIS, the same cost of other films paid in the Yes VOD service (for comparison, the ticket price for a movie film is NIS 40).


In addition, YES TV will be launching the French Channel France 3, which will allow the French-speaking audience to keep in touch with what is currently happening in Europe; Due to the situation, the company will allow free viewing in the first month to all customers. The new channel will be launched at channel 130 at no cost to all customers in the first month, after which it will cost 16.9 NIS per month.

"DONNE-MOI DES AILES, courtesy of Red Cape Distribution, was one of the most successful films this year in France with nearly two million viewers. Nicolas Vanier'S films appeal to the whole family and combine references to nature and conservation and are always spectacularly filmed with unforgettable powerful scenes due to their visual aesthetics. This is the first time a family film has been selected to open the festival.


CANCELLED - Three guests will present their films during the festival this year.


Director, screenwriter, comedian and musician Nicolas Bedos will present his film LA BELLE ÉPOQUE starring Daniel Auteuil, Fanny Ardant, Guillaume Canet and Doria Tillier. The film has been nominated for 11 César Awards, and 4 Crystal Ball Awards and has been screened at the most reputable festivals worldwide.


Bedos, one of France's most brilliant creators has created a romantic comic drama about love and magic. Victor's wife has rejected him. Their son, along with his friend Antoine set up a special venture to revisit nostalgic memories, allowing Victor to relive his love story from 40 years ago and rediscover the passion, and most important emotion in our lives, the ability to love and be loved.


Screenings in the presence of the director will take place at the Tel-Aviv Cinematheque on March 24th at 18:30 and 21:00, at the Jerusalem Cinematheque pn March 25th at 21:00. The film will be distributed to movie theaters all over the country right after its screening at the festival by Nachshon Films and Red Cape.


Jézabel Marques, will be presenting her first film as director of SOL. A tango singer living in Argentina, arrives in France to meet her grandson whom she has never seen, the son of her late son with whom she has severed all ties. Marques is known as an actress. This is her first full length feature film as a director. She is originally Israeli and moved to France following her marriage to Olivier Nakache co-director of "The Intouchables".


Screenings in the presence of the director will take place on March 28th, 20:00 at the Netanya Culture Hall, March 28th, 21:00 at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque with a talk after the movie and March 29th, 19:00 at the Jerusalem Cinematheque.


Keren Ben Raphaël will present her latest film THE END OF LOVE. The Israeli-French director, who is known for her previous film "Virgins" premiered her new film at the Venice Film Festival, following an invitation. "The End of Love" is a low-budget film, creating an exciting cinematic experience. Julie and Yuval live in Paris with their new baby. Yuval returns to Israel to renew his work visa, and gets stuck in Israel. Their relationship continues through Skype, and Yuval watches his son grow from a distance. Can their love be maintained through such a form of interaction? Keren and her partner, photographer Damien Dufresne, created a wonderful film featuring Judith Chemla and Arieh Worthalter alongside Joy Rieger, Odeya Koren and Nathan Dathner. The film will be screened in the presence of the director and actors at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque on March 27th at 14:00 p.m.


Carolyn Builds, CEO Eden Cinema and festival founder along with Stéphanie Rabourdin, audiovisual attaché at the French Institute, made sure to include several films made by female directors at the festival. Alongside films by Keren Ben Raphaël and Jézabel Marques additional films created by womeninclude: J'IRAI OU TU IRAS /I 'LL GO WHERE YOU GO by actress and director Géraldine Nakache (Marques's sister-in-law), LES EBLOUIS / THE DAZZLED by actress and director Sarah Suco, and ARAB BLUES by French-Tunisian director Manel Labidi.


A special experience is expected for cinema and chanson enthusiasts with the screening of the special film "Aznavour". In 1948, Édith Piaf gave Charles Aznavour an 8-millimeter camera that accompanied him throughout his life, and he photographed and documented tour campaigns, visits to Armenia, the country from which his family came, love, marriage, children and also a visit to Israel. Before his death, Aznavour and director Marc Di Domenico began working on a film then Aznavour died. Roman Droux is the film narrator. The film integrates several scenes of Aznavour's performance footage from his long career. In honor of the film screening, François Truffaut's film SHOOT THE PIANO PLAYER will also be screened, starring Charles Aznavour. Aznavour's photographs taken by the 8-millimeter camera set also appear in the documentary.


Other films to be screened at the festival include:

  • Arnaud Desplechin's latest film ROUBAIX UNE LUMIÈRE / OH MERCY nominated for 7 Cesar Awards, including for the film, director and actors Roschdy Zem and Sarah Forestier.

  • Hirokazu Kore-eda's LA VÉRITÉ / THE TRUTH starring Catherine Deneuve and Juliette Binoche.

  • Nicolas Boukhrief'S film TROIS JOURS ET UN VIE / THREE DAYS AND A LIFE.

  • LA VIE SCOLAIRE / SCHOOL LIFE one of the greatest successes of the past year by Grand Corps Malade and Mehdi Idir.

  • MES JOURS DE GLOIRE/ MY DAYS OF GLORY directed by Antoine de Bary with the rising star Vincent Lacoste.

  • Director Jalil Lespert will present his version of Feydeau's play LE DINDON/ THE FOOL starring Dany Boone, Guillaume Gallienne and more.

  • In addition, Michel Ocelot's César winning animation film DILILI À PARIS / DILILI IN PARIS will be screened, a film full of imagination, visual beauty and full of cultural references.


LES TRADUCTEURS / THE TRANSLATORS , the film closing the festival is a rhythmic and exciting thriller, starring an international cast of actors, Lambert Wilson, Olga Kurylenko, Ricardo Scarmacchio and more. Nine translators from around the world are hired to translate the latest book into a bestselling trilogy, so the book is released in all countries at the same time, except that the program goes awry. The film was issued to the cinemas later this year in a new film distribution.


The 18 films feature different facets of French cinema: family movies, suspense films, social dramas, comedic love stories and everything in French with the best of the favorite veteran filmstars: Juliette Binoche, Catherine Deneuve, Daniel Otay, Fannie Arden, Guillaume Cana, Danny Boone, Rushdie Zem, Lambert Wilson, alongside new-generation stars: Cami Cotten, Emily Deccan, and Nessen Lacoste, Zita Henro, Sarah Forestier, and a large selection of intriguing young actors in their early stages.
